Layout 15 - Two Tool Layout

General Document Setup

  • 11in. x 8.5in. Portrait Format

  • 2 pages, with “facing pages” checked

  • Start # = 2

  • Columns 1, column gutter 0.25in.

  • Margins = 0.5 in. all sides

  • Bleed = 0.125in.

    • This is a very important step if you want ANY full bleed images!

    • Note that you’ll also have to drag out any images that you want full bleed out to the bleed mark

Step 1: Image Placement on Left Page

  • Select the pen tool (P) (our trusty tool number 1) to create a rectangle frame on the left page.

    • Make sure you close the shape by ending up where you started, you’ll see a tiny circle beside the cursor when you do this properly.

  • Drag an image into the frame and fit it proportionally.

    • Right click > Fitting > Fit Frame Proportionally

  • Adjust the size as needed.

Step 2: Text Elements on Left Page

  • Use the text tool (T) (our trusty tool #2) to create a large text box.

  • Type a phrase like "Take the leap of faith" and style it with the desired font (e.g., Futra Demi is what I use here).

  • Adjust the text box size, spacing, and opacity for a visually appealing layout.

    • I use 48 size font and have changed the spacing between the lines so it is visually coherent.

Step 3: Additional Text on Left Page

  • Use the text tool again to add placeholder text using the Text Tool, adjusting font and creating columns if needed.

    • To do this, we select the text box, right click and click on “text frame options”. Then change the number of columns to “2”.

  • Fine-tune the appearance, ensuring it complements the overall design.

Step 4: Advanced Layout on Second Page

  • Access the layout guides and create seven rows for the dynamic design.

    • Layout > Create Guides

  • Utilize the pen tool to draw shapes resembling paper cutouts, ensuring a visually interesting layout.

    • Make sure that they are within our guides, this will make the next steps a lot easier.

  • Add text elements strategically, such as "Work Harder, Not Smarter," aligning them with the guides.

    • Make the text almost as big at the rows.

    • Select all text > type > create outline

    • Adjust all texts until they almost occupy one row of the guides.

    • Place texts at designated spots.

  • Transform text elements for stylized effects, like making them jagged or rotating them.

Step 5: Finishing Touches on Second Page

  • Extend the visual elements beyond the page borders for a dynamic effect.

  • Select all frames created and make them a compound path under Objects > Path > Make Compound Path.

  • Drag an image into the compound path, ensuring it covers all frames.

  • Adjust the image size and position within the margins.

Step 6: Background and Color

  • Create a background rectangle using the pen tool, filling it with a desired color.

  • Arrange the background to the back using the "Arrange" option.

    • Right click on the image > Send to back

  • Adjust the fill color of text elements to ensure visibility.

Step 7: Final Adjustments

  • Fine-tune the layout by aligning elements with margins.

  • Ensure a cohesive color scheme

    • Change the title on the left page to a color that matches the theme of the right using your judgement.

  • Save and export the document as needed.
